SMPS Atlanta presents, The Future of Biotech and Technology Luncheon. We will discuss the present and future of biotechnology, technology, growth issues and simulation industries in both the public and private sectors. Topics will include varying perspectives on biotech and technology in the Atlanta Metro Area and how we can successfully grow these industries into a powerhouse for future economic and employment growth.

Rep. Amos Amerson
Chairman Science and Technology

House Science and Technology Chair Amos Amerson, a retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel, served 22 years in the military. His last tour of duty was with the Atomic Energy Commission under the Department of Energy in which he coordinated underground nuclear testing with the Department of Defense, Central Intelligence Agency and the Presidential Staff.
Rep. Amerson has a degree in Nuclear Engineering with a specialty in Radiation Safety, a Master’s Degree in Quantitative Methods, and a Ph.D. in Economic Statistics. He has served in Vietnam as well as most of the Pacific Region from Korea to Thailand. He was assigned to the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joint Strategic Targeting Planning Staff, which analyzed intelligence to determine Russia’s capabilities and afterwards planned targets for strategic nuclear delivery. He was also Chief of the Strategic Analysis Section.
After retiring from the military, Rep, Amerson taught in the Business Department at North Georgia College and State University from 1982-1998. He was first elected to the Georgia House in 2000 and has served as Chair of the Science and Technology Committee since 2005. He is also a member of the Appropriations, Higher Education, and Energy, Utilities, and Telecommunications Committees.
Stefan Schulze, M.S., M.B.A

Stefan has over 15 years of experience in the life sciences industry in both research and business development roles. He received an M.S. degree in Genetics from the University of South Florida, and an MBA from the University of Georgia. As a scientist, Stefan has co-authored 15 published research articles and 4 patent applications in the fields of agricultural genetics and evolution. Stefan joined UGA¹s BioBusiness Center in 2008, where he is responsible for the development of new companies based upon University technology. He also works to attract existing life science companies to the business incubator on the Athens campus by facilitating collaborations between UGA faculty and industry.

Charles Craig has been involved with the life sciences industry for 10 years, most recently as author and editor of Ernst & Young's Global Biotechnology Reports. He was responsible for production of publications tracking the progress of the life sciences industry in the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific. He introduced Ernst & Young's first Global Biotechnology Report in 2002 and its first Asia-Pacific Biotechnology Report in 2004. Mr. Craig also was a member of Ernst & Young's Global Health Sciences Center for Industry Change, assisting clients in strategic planning.
Before joining Ernst & Young, Mr. Craig was director of publications for the Washington, DC-based Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), the national association in the U.S. representing the life sciences industry. He was involved in all aspects of BIO's activities in behalf of life sciences companies. Mr. Craig also was executive editor, managing editor and staff writer of Thomsons BioWorld Publishing Group, which includes BioWorld Today, a leading publication reporting on the life sciences industry. Mr. Craig has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia and a Master of Journalism degree from Louisiana State University.
Carol Henderson

Carol Henderson is director of Health Sciences and Advanced Technologies in the Business Enterprise Division at the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD).
Ms. Henderson leads the team’s work to identify and recruit innovation-based companies to the state and assist existing strategic industry-based businesses. She also focuses on strategic planning and building on existing alliances and resources such as the University System of Georgia, the Centers of Innovation, Georgia Research Alliance, Georgia Bio, Technology Association of Georgia and Biotechnology Industry Organization.
Ms. Henderson brings more than a decade of experience in economic development to the table, most recently as a senior project manager for GDEcD who focused on the life sciences industry. In this capacity, she worked with an array of life sciences companies, including Novartis, Merck, Dow, Eli Lilly, Pfizer, Genetech, Solvay and Merial. Ms. Henderson came to the department in 2000. Prior to joining GDEcD, she worked for economic development organizations in her home state of Indiana.
Ms. Henderson holds a B.S. in Public and Environmental Affairs and an M.P.A. from Indiana University. She is active in organizations such as the Technology Association of Georgia, Women in Technology, National Association for Female Executives, Georgia Bio and the Georgia Economic Developers Association. She is certified as an Economic Development Finance Professional and holds certificates in project management and public management.
SMPS Atlanta Sending Care Packages to Iraq
SMPS Atlanta would like to show the troops some love in time for Valentine’s Day. For the January 26th SMPS lunch program, we will be collecting Valentine’s candy, small stuffed animals, and letters of support for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Gulf Region Division (GRD). The GRD is comprised of Civilians, Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Contractors. They provide quality and sustainable engineering in support of civil/military construction in Iraq.
